Note
In 1901 census, Richard was living with his widowed mother and five siblings in 77 Mungret Street, Limerick. He was aged 19 and his occupation was "Carpenter". He was a prominent Rugby player and, together with Michael Keyes, Con Carey, Thomas Hannon and Michael Quigley, was responsible for the revitalisation of Young Munsters Rugby Club, Limerick. Emigrated to the USA in 1907 on "The Teutonic". His Ellis Island record states that he was 24 and a Joiner. (interview with Dick's daughter, Betty Redfearn by John McLaughlin of Young Munsters Rugby Club.) He married Fern Leppert, a Canadian. They had three daughters. Both he and his wife, with their children, visited Ireland numerous times. (TO'S - Jan 2013)
Note
As per email from Colleen Mehner, Fern visited Ireland for the last time in the 1970s. Hanny Mathews was still alive at that time. She also says that the last time her father, Dick, visited Ireland was in 1948.
Note
Indenture Details (See Album Tab) Dick was indentured with John Ryan, Builder. He was sponsored by his uncle, Michael Dutton Mathews, as his father had died a few years previously. John Ryan Builders were the contractors for the Presbyterian Church on the corner of Mallow Street and Henry Street (see link below). Colleen and Betty have a family tradition that Dick was involved in the making of the mold for the Rose Window at the front of the church. Note
EMAIL (From Fern's daughter, Colleen, to TO'S; Jan 2013) " Just for clarity of facts......Dick's wife Fern came (To Ireland)with Dick, and Betty and Peggy, when they were little girls. And then came back that one time, after Dick was already deceased. Betty, their eldest, came one time as a little girl, then one time with her husband (Red) Richard, and then came in 2012 with her Granddaughter Cindy, so that is 3 times. Peggy, the second eldest, came as a child and then back that one time with her husband (Dick) Richard O'Donnell. I (Colleen) came in 1985 with my late husband Paul, (and our children) Guy, and Shannon. So that is one time for me. As you can see, I want to make sure to the best of my ability, to insure the info you get is accurate. I do plan to come again, just not sure when. "
