Note
On his marriage Cert to Mary Byrne, Michael Dutton Mathews states that his father was Richard, Pensioner, Decd. Working assumption that the only kind of pensioner he is likely to have been is Army. Circumstantially, Dutton was living in Wellington Terrace when Mary Byrne died. This was built as officer accomodation for the "New Barracks". Also, one of Dutton's jobs, referred to in his obit, was that of "barrack contractor for the government". Finally, in Griffith's Valuation (1850s), there is a Richard Mathews with property at 33, Prospect Row, close to the same barracks. Prospect Row becomes Rosbrien Road, where Michael Dutton later owned two properties, just before it meets Punch's Cross.
Note
In Griffith's (c 1850) there was a Richard Mathews living in 33 Prospect Row. This was also called "Hall's Range" after the man who developed it, William H(enry) Hall. Hall also owned the quarry behind the houses, since filled in. These houses were demolished in the 60s and replaced by small "town houses". If you look at the link below you will see the "Range" - Across the road from the entrance to the Barracks. Number 33 is towards the left - Anyone who lived there would worry about the quarry at the bottom of the "garden" ! Aerial view of Prospect Row / Hall's Range http://memorylanelimerick.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Volume-1/G0000hBgBNxCGt1I/I0000KLfsk9gqwsw Part of Prospect Row/Hall's range, before demolition http://memorylanelimerick.photoshelter.com/image/I0000e0T5aRlT0yw *********************************** How coincidental that Michael Dutton Mathews came to own a quarry approximately three hundred yards further out the Ballinacurra Road from Hall's Quarry. This quarry was later filled in for the building of Maryville (Home of his daughter Mary and her husband, Frank O'Sullivan) and the range of houses that include Dun Aongus (home of his duaghter Mary in later life).
Note
When his son, also Richard, married Hanora O'Keiffe on Aug 16, 1879, he gave his home address as 17 Westland Row (now Bowman St). This is where Richard was living when he died. Richard's (Jr.) marriage cert gives Richard's (Sr) occupation as Boot Maker. This casts some doubt on Michael Dutton's marriage cert in which he says that his father was a Pensioner. Although, presumably, he could have been a Boot Maker in the Army ???
Note
As per Ursula Foley (granddaughter of Mary Mathews-Whelan), Richard and Margaret were married in St Munchins Anglican/C of I Church on King's Island. Assumed that Richard was Protestant and Margaret was Catholic. At least one of their Children, Henry Patrick was baptised both in St Michaels (R.C.) church in Denmark Street and in St. Munchins Anglican/ C of I.
