Note | Family historian to whom we are all so indebted.
She prepared a handwritten history in 1935 to coincide with the first reunion. It was based on conversations about family lore that she had with her grandmother, Mary Hynes (nee O'Sullivan) early in the first decade of the 20th century.
She wrote it in the form of a letter to O'Sullivan, who was then (1935) head of the family firm, based in O'Curry street.
Her grandmother was the daughter of the most colourful member of the family, William O'Sullivan (Rockite/Rightboy/Whiteboy), who was born in the Rathkeale/Ballingarry area of County Limerick around the end of the 18th century.
He, in turn, was son of O'Sullivan, who came from Blennerville to that part of county Limerick around the middle of the 18th century, as Land Steward for Colonel Odell.
May Sweetland was also the source of an article written Jack O'Sullivan (son of Daniel), on the Windmill St. (pronounced Wymill) and O'Curry Street area in the Old Limerick Journal (Vol 15, Spring 1984)
In the 1901 census, May was aged 16, living with her widowed mother, Catherine, aged 39. Catherine was a shopkeeper and May was a Post Office Assistant. |
Note | May lived in 4, Little O'Curry Street, Limerick (according to Mary Harty) |
