Shared note | Worked for deLacy, Builder and Flynn Builder
Emigrated to USA in 1860s
Returned 1869
Setup family firm in 1870??? Questionable .. probably his father Daniel
Daniel went to USA and left wife and new baby (Mary) at home in Ireland.
Did he go over with brothers or after?
Indications that brothers in NY were not very hospitable to nephews who came to visit .. Tom/Dan |
Note | Entries in Trade Directories for Daniel O'Sullivan
Basset Directory
For both 1877 and 1880, Daniel is entered as a Glazier, with business address : 4 Little Frederick Street (this is a small terrace house in little O'Curry Street - May Sweetland lived across the street in number 9.)
Patriot's Handbook
We know (from the census) that, by 1901, the family was living in 25 Frederick (O'Curry) St. and Daniel was noted as "Builder". Accordingly, in the Patriot's Handbook of 1908, the name of the firm, listed under "builders", has become D Sullivan andSon (The son being, presumably, Mick. The latter would have been 28 in 1908 and is noted in the 1911 census as a Master Builder. In the same (1911) census, Frank, who eventually took over the business, was 23 and is noted as a carpenter.)
Cork & Munster Directory
In this directory (three entries - 1915, 1918, and 1920)
Daniel is listed at the same address( 25 Frederick St), under "Builders".
Summary
As per May Sweetland's family lore, Daniel had been apprenticed as a Glazier to the Quaker firm of Unthank. Based on these entries, it looks like he started in a small way, also in the Glazier business, in a terraced house (4. Little O'Curry St) some timebefore 1877 and, as time progressed, moved out on to O'Curry Street proper to number 25, at the top of the street. His trade by then was that of building contractor.
By the 1911 census, his eldest, Michael, had married and was living three doors down in number 22, with his wife, Elsie and one year old daughter, Maureen. |
